Cleaning Bulldog Wrinkles
Bulldogs tend to have messy face wrinkles. The older they get, the messier the wrinkles. How often you clean these wrinkles depends on the dog. Some do very well if you clean the wrinkles a couple of times a week. Some need it on a daily basis. When you clean the wrinkles, wash his nose and apply a good rub of Vaseline to keep it soft. It’s better to clean more often than you think you need to than not often enough. You can clean the wrinkles with a soft, damp cloth and then dry. Or you can wash them using the shampoo you use to bath the dog. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly. One of the best ways is to wipe the wrinkles clean with Baby Wipes with lanolin and aloe. Whatever method you use, be sure to get the deep nose wrinkle clean. You may need to put a soothing ointment in the deep nose wrinkle. If it is irritated Panalog will help to heal. Diaparene Ointment will soothe and dry the wrinkle. This contains zinc oxide, so before you apply it, rub Vaseline into the dog’s nose.
It’s very important to keep the wrinkles dry other dermatitis can form.

Could be a yeast infection. Call your vet or ask a groomer. They will know.

This is a bacteria growing in the wet fur. I use Eye Envy and it is great. All natural no chemicals and will not hurt if you get it in your baby’s eyes. I am adding some questions and answers from the site I use to order mine. These are wonderful people and always answer my questions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What causes excessive tearing and staining:
A: Staining can be caused by a variety of things:
Clogged or Shallow Tear Ducts: Studies indicate that 20-25% of small dogs and cats are born with closed of shallow tear ducts. Tears overflow because there the eyelid space is not deep enough to contain them.
Excessive Tearing: When the face hair is wet from excessive tearing, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast infections (AKA: Red Yeast, which causes deep reddish-brown stains); Low grade bacteria infections may also cause excessive tearing.
Cutting Teeth: Cutting teeth may cause changes in the head & mouth structure of your pet, placing pressure on the tear ducts.
Irritation & Allergies: Some animals get hair or eyelashes into their eyes causing irritation. Many breeds are susceptible to allergies. Shampoos and other chemicals can also irritate their eyesSome foods cause allergic reactions; animals may also build an allergic reaction over time to a type of food.
Water: Water with high mineral levels causes staining
Food & Treats: Diet can play a significant role in tearing. Many commercial foods contain additives, preservatives and food coloring. This could lead to staining.
Fleas: Fleas survive in moisture, which they get from the eye or moth area. This could cause irritation and in addition red stains left behind may be from flea feces. These are just a few reasons. There are MANY more!!
Q: What is Eye Envy so different that all the other products that I’ve bought and don’t work?
A: Eye Envy works at the true problem, a bacteria infection. Eye Envy contains a cleanser, an astringent (to dry the area) and herbal flower extract (acts as a natural antibiotic) and an antibacterial.
Eye Envy is a topical tear stain remover. Other products are often masked as palatable supplements, taking months to work and requiring your pet to ingest antibiotics (e.g. tylan, tylosin as tartrate, collidal silver).
Q: What if I’ve used bleach or peroxide to clean the area around the eyes?
A: Bleach/Peroxide make the hair shaft very pourous, causing the stain to set into the hair. Eye Envy will only lighten the areas previously damaged by bleach or peroxide, but all regrowth will be clean.
PLEASE do not use peroxide, bleach or woolite on your animals.
Q: Is Eye Envy safe to use on my pregnant dog or cat?
A: Yes. Since Eye Envy is applied externally, it is 100% safe to use on pregnant, lactating and even small kittens (over the age of 7 weeks).

Sounds like a yeastie-beastie to me!
I’ve always used Malaseb pads for the yeast infections my bullies would get in their wrinkles or toes. The pads clear them up pretty quickly. I order mine from the vet but if anyone knows where else to get them, let me know….

Check with your vet. Bulldogs, pugs and other wrinkly-faced dogs need their wrinkles cleaned daily. If you have been cleaning daily and there is still a smell, your dog may have developed a yeast infection in her face wrinkes.

The best way to maintain the smell is to keep them dry as much as possible. You can use a q-tip first use it to apply alcohol(lightly) then a dry one to absorb any extra moisture use peroxide around the eyes and nose area to avoid watering eyes. Moisture is the reason they stink. Also there may be an infection due to the moisture(from baby wipes/water) simuliar to a yeast infection that may need to be addressed as well

You could try Malaseb wipes instead of baby wipes. You should be able to get them from your vet or you can order them at http://www.entirelypets.com

You need to take her to the vets. Her skin smells because of an infection on the skin. This is very common with any dog that has alot of wrinkles. When you clean her wrinkles do you make sure you dry them too??? If you dont then your only adding to the problem. Moisture remains and irritates the skin and then infection sets in.
Get Zoe into the vets as soon as you can and have them show you the right way to clean between the wrinkles.

I am a vet tech and a bulldog owner. You can use the baby wipes, or you can get medicated wipes from the vet. you should try to wipe them out daily. Make sure you dry the wrinkles too. As the other person said it could be yeast, which would most likely need medication. (yeast smells like dirty socks) They also have “pockets” of space under their tail, this should be cleaned the same way often, if you don’t they can get an infection called screw tail. Try to keep the areas dry.

When my brother had a Shar-pei puppy we had to use a toothbrush and pull up all his wrinkles, scrub and let go of of wrinkle, scrub and continue! That kept the dirt and bugs out of his wrinkles!!

A good bath, with tear-free baby shampoo scrubbing on the wrinkles. If this doesn’t help, she may be getting into something nasty on a daily basis.
